The inspiration for the project that went viral has two parts. I truly haven’t sat down to explain it.
It has kept me so busy for a year, that I let go on the habit to blog. I also had a newborn and so
many new transitions to figure out. Now seems like a time I can dedicate to telling this story.
I have almost 100 portraits of these amazing women. I’m wrapping up the project with 40 more
women to document. So let me give you some background.
October 22, 2016, I delivered my second child, a boy at UK hospital. It was a full moon, so I’ll spare you the details
of the birth story, actually, I’ll write it here so you don’t miss a beat.
The nurse that discharged me a couple days later was the same nurse that helped me with Talmage in 2015.
I guess the odds of that are high when you have two babies 17 months apart. (crazy right?)
The nurse was Rachel, I have yet to photograph her. I’m actually going to stop this blog post and call the hospital and leave a message for her.
Okay, I the nurse just took my info and is going to call me back (12.9.17 8:24 pm)
So Rachel had little kids too, and it hit me pretty hard…. postpartum emotions were running high!
I was pretty overwhelmed that Rachel worked full time as a nurse and was a mom.
I left the hospital with a new baby, and I just kept thinking about Rachel and every other nurse that
worked and raised kids.
A couple days later I was on a moms group on Facebook and saw a post by a female firefighter recruited women to become firefighters.
The emotions collided. I needed to photograph her in her uniform with her daughter. So I did.
This is Megan and her daughter Delaney.
This is where the “fire” was started.
Happy Anniversary to Mothers Who Save
If you know a mother worthy of these portraits, please send her my way as we are wrapping up volume one of this series.
xoxo
