I know everyone hears marriage advice. What’s makes the wedding day advice so important?
I have the special privilege of witnessing so many relationship begins, essentially with engagement and marriage. It’s so good I had to share it.
This past weekend I heard the Phrase:
Marriage Advice For October 2017
Marriage Advice #1 Be a help meet, not a hurt meet.
I loved that, because you know what? We are not perfect once we wed. Marriage is simply a promise to treat that person with love and respect, but we still have to be others, which can create some interesting dynamics in marriage. This is one reasons you’ll hear people say: Marriage is so hard. It requires to imperfect people to make a relationship work. There is absolutely no shame in this. So don’t ever be ashamed if you don’t agree with your spouse all the time. Don’t be ashamed that imperfection is present. Often times, its the process of which we pursue that can bring us the greatest joys.
The word “meet” in sixteenth-century English meaning “fitting” or “proper .
There are twenty one references in the Bible for the words Help meet, which is the same as Helpmate. Being a Help-meet does not mean one of you is the silent partner, in fact, many of these phrases denotes in the scriptures the process of overcoming the threshold and transitioning into “one” having the same heart, intention and goal within the marriage.
The meaning of a Help Meet
The original Hebrew for meet means that Eve was adequate for, or equal to, Adam. She wasn’t his servant or his subordinate. And the Hebrew for help in “help meet” is ezer,a term meaning that Eve drew on heavenly powers when she supplied their marriage with the spiritual instincts uniquely available to women as a gender gift.
When we view our marriage or relationship in these terms, it’s empowering. We need that empowerment because it’s a partnership. Each person brings unique strengths, qualities and weaknesses to this partnership.
In the Garden of Eden
Eve was designed to be very different than Adam. He is male and she is female. She also had strengths opposite of Adam as well. And just as the bride and groom this weekend were advised to help and not hurt, there is so much more to discover about ourselves and marriage.
I want to hear your marriage advice! Please comment on this post so others can learn from your insights!
I’ll share mine later this month!
